Disney (NYSE: DIS) and Priceline.com (NASDAQ: PCLN) report earnings after the bell today – part of one last busy week of second-quarter earnings before the season comes to a close.
Natural gas giant Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK) released its earnings earlier this morning, its stock rising more than 9% today after reporting that its income doubled in the second quarter.
MGM Resorts (NYSE: MGM) also reported strong earnings this morning, helping push the S&P 500 index above the 1,400 for the first time since early May.
The NASDAQ was the day’s fastest rising index, gaining a full percentage point to eclipse 3,000 points – also a first since May.
All told, 65% of companies that have reported this earnings season have beaten expectations. According to Capital IQ, about 40% of companies that have reported have achieved double-digit earnings growth.
