One attribute that is unique to Tesla is that its cars are capable of downloading new software, not unlike downloading updates to a PC or smartphone.
A nice benefit to the digital connection between Tesla and its vehicles is that the company receives vast amounts of data from its cars, enabling it to identify potential issues before they become real problems. It also helps Tesla track key metrics, like the recent announcement that Tesla vehicles have cumulatively driven 1 billion miles.
The real reason these software updates are such a big deal is because Tesla’s on-board computer system controls so much of the car. The company is thus able to release incredible new features months and even years after a customer has driven off the lot.

If you’ve been watching TV lately you’ve probably seen ads for one of Volvo’s newest safety features. It’s an automatic braking system that detects obstacles and pedestrians and applies full braking power before the driver even has time to react to the hazard.

In other words, while other car manufacturers are adding technology upgrades to their newest vehicles on the assembly line, Elon Musk wirelessly sent Tesla’s latest and greatest innovations to every Tesla Model S that’s already on the road.
The ability to make improvements to a customer’s car after they have driven it off the lot is unique to Tesla. Unless a recall is issued for your vehicle, manufacturers rarely have an opportunity to modify a car after it has left the assembly line.
Tesla flips that traditional model on its head, and the result is a better customer experience. After all, if such an innovative company only made improvements to new vehicles, there would be a huge incentive for customers to hold out for the newest model.
The next step is for Musk and company to roll out the self-driving car technology that Tesla has been working on. It’s worth noting that it will take more than a software update to introduce self-driving technology to cars already on the road, as these cars lack some of the hardware needed to operate autonomously.
Tesla’s over-the-air software updates and self-driving technology are unique, but they won’t stay that way for long. There is no doubt in my mind that we are witnessing the greatest revolution in the automobile industry since Henry Ford introduced assembly line manufacturing.
