Google’s New AI Venture

Bellwether.

That’s the name of Google’s new AI venture, which is partnering with the military to use AI in responding to natural disasters.

Bellwether is a team that’s part of Google parent Alphabet’s X innovation hub.

The AI venture just announced that it’s working with the National Guard and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to improve the Guard’s disaster response processes.

They’re developing a system that uses AI and machine learning (ML) to quickly analyze aerial imagery of disaster scenes to identify damage.

That can then inform the National Guard. And coordinate a better disaster response.

Right now, the Guard conducts damage assessments manually.

But AI can now automate and speed up that process dramatically.

As the man who leads the National Guard’s operations says…

“Using AI and ML to do the routine tasks of georectification, identification, and labeling will greatly speed up how quickly we can get important information to the folks that need it most.”

Today we’re seeing AI revolutionizing a lot of industries.

Take the world of finance for example.

Big banks like JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM) and BlackRock (NYSE: BLK) are realizing just how powerful AI can be for their clients’ returns.
