On Saturday morning, 100,000 live cannabis plants arrived at Vancouver International Airport.
They were in transit from Ontario, and on their way to the world’s biggest cannabis farm (click here for details).
Under tight security – including armored vehicles – the cannabis plants were driven 37 miles east of Vancouver to the farming town of Aldergrove. The quiet town of 12,000 people is located right on the U.S. border in an area with prized agricultural land.
The destination was a farm that previously grew bell peppers.
On Friday, Health Canada approved a cultivation license from BC Tweed Joint Venture Inc.
World’s Largest Cannabis Operation
That news finalizes the transformation of this greenhouse into the home of the largest cannabis operation in the world.
Located on 55 acres, the greenhouse will be 1.3 million square feet. And it will be producing cannabis for sale by July 2018 when recreational sales of pot begin in Canada.
The initial shipment of 100,000 live cannabis plant clones will be planted to create the first crop of Canadian cannabis at the greenhouse.
Tweed is simultaneously working on a second site. It’s an even bigger greenhouse, with a total size of 1.7 million square feet.
BC Tweed is a partnership that’s 66% owned by Canopy Growth (TSX: WEED). The minority partner has not been disclosed.
Canadian Cannabis: Wave of Demand
This license was approved just four months after the initial application. And it marks the 90th license issued by the Canadian government.
Legal recreational cannabis sales are expected to begin in just 130 days. With the clock ticking down to July 1, Health Canada is pulling out all the stops to assure that there is ample supply.
